"I'm playing with light in both of these images.

In the one image, an artificial source paints light in a mostly natural setting.

In the other, natural sunlight shines through a window and casts shadows of text on the sidewalk beneath it.

Both images attempt to use the manipulation of light to showcase a balance between the natural and unnatural."

On my walk home, I would see these skyscrapers every single day, and thought nothing of them. However, during a summer shower, the shroud of mist illuminated by the lights gives the buildings a veil of obscurity. Suddenly the familiar becomes a beauty, something that was taken for granted I could not take my eyes off of.

Taking a moment to introduce you to some of Yak’s favorite black photographers!

Avion Pearce

Currently studying to receive their MFA from Yale’s School of Art, Avion Pearce is an outstanding photographer who illustrates and celebrates the beauty of queer black love. Their  use of framing, intricate relationship with environment,  and employment of props allows them to create original narratives as seen with their photographic series “Shadows”.

Akilah Townsend

Whether it be her editorial campaigns for Nike or her portraiture, every aspect of her work is impressive. The love Akilah has for her community, especially black women is always present and captures black culture in Chicago

Geoff Haggray

Geoff is documentary photographer hailing from New York. His eye for composition makes him unique talent as well as his ability to capture a moment with his street photography.

Ryan McSwain

The things that immediately stand out in Mcswain’s art are his careful attention to texture, as well as his passion for linear composition which elevates his work. He often shoots double exposures with flowers and man made infrastructure which illustrates a great contrast between man and nature

Rukie Jumah

Jumah is a Nigerian based photographer whose work captures the vibrance and artistry of Nigeria. Her editorial work is always very considerate of composition and color.
