For this issue I’ve submitted a few photos I took in Manhattan on St. Patrick’s day last year. It was my first time in the city and the subway dropped me off right in the heart of Times Square where I was promptly greeted by a Minnie Mouse wearing Jordan 3s. She grabbed my arm and tried to get me to pose for a photo. I politely declined, but Minnie was very persistent. I was eventually able to pull my arm free and cut through Rockefeller Plaza to get to 5th Avenue and watch the St. Patrick’s Day Parade roll along.

Subway Car

This image speaks to the nonvocal communication we share, or choose not to share, when tolerating the packed rush hour subway car. The green glow adds to the discomfort that we feel, and the expression on the man’s face makes you wonder what relationship these two might have. A crowded place is full of these tiny interactions, personal moments in the ambiguous mass.

Crowded Skyline

When I see this skyline, I cannot help but to think about the different eras that each of these buildings were erected. Manhattan wasn’t always so crowded; at one point there were only a few high-rises. But as time passes, more and more buildings reach to the sky seemingly pushing through the crowd. Mixed generations of architecture commingle, as do the people that inhabit them.

Since leaving the west coast and experiencing the full range of the seasons, one of the moments that I enjoy the most is a warm autumn evening. It is amazing the sense of community that the change in weather brings, and on afternoons like these it seems as though the patios spring to life. No one knows how many more pleasant nights are to come before the chill sets in and winter is upon us.
