Welcoming the Evening
“Nighttime arrived imperceptibly and softened the air. I looked up, perhaps unconsciously, tilting my head as the breeze swept goosebumps on my clammy skin. Or, maybe, I just attempted to grasp a fleeting semblance of sunlight as the surrounding forest coalesced into a singular dark. Regardless, I welcomed her.”

Ever since I was a kid growing up in Japan, one of my favorite things to do was roam the streets, whether on a bicycle, a motorcycle, or just on foot, after the city had gone to sleep. I've always been fascinated by how the darkness of night conceals what I don’t want to see, while streetlights and neon signs paint the city in a new light. Now, much older and living in a different city in a different country, I still feel that same excitement I did as a teenager, cruising through the night.
